1st FEBRUARY 2025
LONDON – KINGS PLACE
Live Performance of the 2024 album THE RITUALS OF HILDEGARD REIMAGINED
Tickets & Information
British composer, performer, and improviser Laura Cannell presents her newest album, ‘The Rituals of Hildegard Reimagined’, an offering of contemporary minimalism to 12th century polymath Hildegard von Bingen – considered by many to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.
On bass recorders, a 12-string knee harp, delay pedal and sparse layering, the performance will conjure a bridge to connect the centuries. (This performance will last approximately 1 hour, without an interval. This is a mixed seating and standing event.)

UNAMPLIFIED LAND – Laura Cannell solo acoustic performance
Laura presents an intimate, un-amplified and site specific performance for LAND. The landscapes of East Anglia are ever present in her soundings, from marsh saltings to blazing sunrises in the east, no matter what she does the landscape keeps appearing in her music. Sometimes welcome, and sometimes and unintended visitor. For this special performance she invites the listener into her world of semi-composed and semi-improvised experimental neo-medievalism. Close your eyes and visit the inner landscapes Laura conjures on violin/overbow violin, bass and double recorders.

THE LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS – PERFORMED BY THE MARIAN CONSORT
World Premiere of a new composition commission by Laura Cannell for The Marian Consort.
This exploration of flowers and gardens, both actual and allegorical, combines settings of the Song of Songs and its evocation of a luscious, fertile landscape by Spanish composers of the late Renaissance with Benjamin Britten’s five playful Flower Songs. Laura Cannell brings together the influences of early, folk and experimental music in an exploration of plant lore (knowledge of plants gained through tradition or anecdote, much like folk lore).

‘A Celebration of the General’
Experience the landscape of 19th-century England through poetry and music.
“A requiem for the commons, heaths and greens once key to East Anglian village life, Justin Hopper and Laura Cannell present a new performance inspired by the language of ‘inclosure’ – one of the most consequential practices of rural life in John Constable’s time. ‘A Celebration of the General’ reworks 19th-century primary-source historical texts into new poems and chants, set to composed and improvised music, to mourn the loss of the commonly held land”

Antiphony of the Trees – Sound Unwrapped
“The captivating performer-composer Laura Cannell presents the live version of her 2022 album Antiphony of the Trees.”
Antiphony of the Trees, a multilayered work inspired by birdsong, was created in Laura Cannell’s studio by manipulating live recorder playing with delay and reverb. For this event she recreates it as an exciting live show by transforming and diffusing the sound in the space to recreate the sonic world of the album with the use of pedals, and roaming speakers attached to performers, an immersive journey inside the treetops. From slow chordal drones to the sound of rapidly beating wings, Cannell plays all the parts of all the birds: the hoarders, the gatherers and the sacred birds. The avian arias which dominate the sky are echoed and the response comes from a new voice.
